This five-course paired wine dinner from Chef Steve Zurkey features cool-climate wines that express the elegance of California's Central Coast, led by winemaker Samuel Louis Smith.
Samuel Louis Smith is a micro-négociant based in Santa Cruz, California. Mountainous terror, organic viticulture, and minimal intervention in the cellar are tenets of the brand. SLS presents a compelling cross-section of the Central Coast, focusing on Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, and cool-climate Syrah from Santa Barbara, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. The brand embodies a neoclassical style, where lower alcohol and higher acidity, stem inclusion in reds, and native fermentations with little to no additions create wines of place, purity, aroma, and structure. As a micro-négoce, Sam primarily purchases grapes from small, independent growers, and all vinification is done at the winery in Santa Cruz.
