Gretta McCall's paintings explore the complex interplay between ourselves and the natural world, moving fluidly between abstraction and recognizable subject matter. Her process begins with an immersive "drawing expedition" into nature. These explorations result in quick, expressive studies of compelling landscapes and forms, which then serve as the source material for her paintings. Her work is driven by the desire to express emotion with the medium, utilizing a love of color to explore endless possibilities and relationships. McCall states, “The landscape has become the subject for exploration because nature has been my refuge, solace and companion since I was a child. Each painting must have a distinct voice. Through the painting process I become aware of the deep places within me that are becoming a part of the painting. Life demands that we embody joy and sorrow simultaneously. Therefore, I seek to reflect this in my work”.
